29 November 2016: The coldest November night

cold-novemberThe Netherlands experienced an unusual cold night for the time of year. It was the coldest November night in almost twenty years. Will the weather be able to give the positive market sentiment of late new wings? A different type of companies might profit from a change in the weather, such as clothing and energy companies. It might breathe new life into the so-called Trump rally that has enlightened the sentiment of investors around the globe. Under these circumstances, investors are not being left out in the cold…

white-chapel-logo-smallUS markets retreated yesterday, mainly in a reaction to slipping oil prices. It was still unclear whether or not OPEC countries would be able to reach an agreement on oil output cuts. Volatility was on the rise: the VIX added more than 5% and our inverse XIV ETNs lost almost 1%. Our return for the year stands at 317%. Return for the quarter remains above 35%.
White Chapel is still some distance away from acting on a change in sentiment. It advises us for the time being to stick with our XIV ETNs.

RS_v05-smallFor many in the Netherlands, the winter season has begun when nighttime temperatures drop to below freezing. Early commuters who travel by car, are typically not amused by this type of weather. They have to rise even earlier than normal, to demist and de-ice their car windows. Every winter, there are those who make a rush job out of it, just to get on the road. Peering through tiny peepholes in their frozen foggy windshield, they risk their and other people’s lives because they value sleep higher than safety. A less dangerous specimen of the hurrying kind uses boiling water to de-ice their car windows. In case they succeed, it will get them on their way quickly. But in the not unlikely case they don’t, the hot water hitting their windscreen will crack the glass. The car will be unfit for driving and they will be forced to work from home. And then there are those who don’t need a kettle of boiling water to find out that the habit of taking the time to do a job properly, is most rewarding.
