9 November 2016: The unexpected

seal-potusIt is the year of the unexpected. Polling agencies need to reinvent themselves. Pundits can take an early retirement. First, we had the totally unexpected outcome of the Brexit referendum. And now we find ourselves with the most unlikely US presidential candidate in history as the 45th President of the United States. What’s next? We can be sure that the upcoming period will be characterized by insecurity. Because we cannot tell what new surprises we can expect, but also because there will be a person in the White House who is the unexpected made flesh. 2016: the year of the unexpected. Will 2017 be any different?

white-chapel-logo-smallYesterday, before the outcome of the US Presidential elections became clear, the markets had a relatively quiet day. Nothing looked out of the ordinary and investors expected a Clinton victory. Major US indices made moderate gains and our newly acquired UVXY ETFs made a loss of more than 6%. It was the quiet before the storm. We will report tomorrow on what the exact effect has been of the election of Donald Trump on the stock markets. More volatility is guaranteed.
At the end of yesterday’s session White Chapel‘s return for the year stood at almost 288%. Return for the quarter was still well above 25%.
White Chapel did not give a trading signal and was pretty convinced that more volatility could be expected…

This will last probably only a few days, because leaves are dropping at a rapid pace. But, yesterday, the full range of colors, from green to almost black, could be observed in the woods.
