24 October 2016: Data and meetings of central bankers won’t give guidance to the markets

dataweekThis and next week will have different inputs that will feed the markets. This week will be data week: there will be an avalanche of U.S., European and Asian corporate earnings. And the week after that, central bankers will meet. Not only the Federal Reserve in the United States will hold a meeting, but also bankers from the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England will gather. Although normally this would be reasons enough to give guidance to the markets, in this particular case it might not be true. This week, investors will keep the meetings of central bankers in the back of their mind. And next week, they will be concerned with the Presidential elections, which will be held the week after next week. Don’t expect any major movements in the markets in the next two or even three weeks.

white-chapel-logo-smallLast Friday, US markets started pessimistic, but ended on a positive note. S&P 500 and Dow closed flat and the NASDAQ added 0.3%. As a result, our newly acquired UVXY ETFs did not have a very good day and lost more than 5% between opening and close. Return for the year dropped to 224% and return for the quarter now sits at 5.8%.
Not another trading signal from White Chapel at the end of Friday’s session. After the optimistic week that last week was, White Chapel is definitely expecting more volatility in the upcoming days.

In an article on MarketWatch, These Dutch Guys read that the already low trading volumes on Wall Street are getting thinner, and that they are now reaching their lowest levels since the beginning of the year. According to MarketWatch, this is partly because investors are taking a wait-and-see attitude in the run-up to November 8. Until the presidential race is run, they are not expected to head back into the market.
That raises the question, what these investors would do in the meantime, to bide their time. These Dutch Guys suspect that there is a rivalry game going on at the trading floor. The goal would be to simulate the final approach to Mars of the Schiaparelli EDM lander. This could be the first attempt of team UVXY:

But then they saw what team S&P 500 Futures came up with. That surely is Winning Material!
